Do Cats Imagine?

What’s so special

About my book?

Do Cats Imagine conveys the idea that perhaps cats use imagination when doing the funny things cats do every day. It encourages young children to use their own imagination as they consider how cats might see their own world while jumping, grooming, climbing, stretching, or skittering about their environment.

Where kids imagine like cats

How I became a writer:

My son, who was 11 at time, was watching our cats one day, when he observed one of them standing on hind legs reaching a front paw up on the top of the cage of one of our other pets. He looked at me, struck by the funny ballet pose, and asked if I thought cats imagined they were pretending ballet when doing that? I thought for a minute and said well, that’s a good question…. And that would be a clever story for you to write. We talked for a bit about all the funny things we had seen our cats do. Then he went on to his next activity and I thought to myself, it would be a funny story. Maybe I’ll write that someday.

Fast forward 22 years later, my son is 32 and I have grandkids. I was a bit intimidated by the concept of actually writing but then thought if I write it for my own enjoyment I really have nothing to lose.

It has been a good lesson for me overall. I overcame a psychological hurdle that held me back from other accomplishments in life, namely a sense of low self-worth and the resulting lack of self-confidence.

I often looked back at the big dreams I held as a child. I talked myself out of pursuing them mostly because I would say to myself, Oh I could never do that or I’m not smart enough to do that, or I’m not good enough…. that was my usual internal dialogue. Now that I am older, I realize it was my own distorted beliefs about myself holding me back; my own negative self-talk feeding my low self-worth.

I hope my book brings smiles to readers’ faces, and makes kids giggle when they hear it and see the pictures. I hope my personal story inspires you to try something you thought you could never do and challenges you to think about your own internal dialogue and how it may hold you back from realizing your own big dreams.
